Happy Monday!

Welcome to Monday!  This is your opportunity to learn a little more about the writer behind the blog.

As you may already have learned, I am an introvert.  I get worn out from being around large groups of people.  This is why I love teaching preschool and piano.  My preschool is small, so we have 15 children at a time.  There are no other preschool classrooms on the same site so I only need to get to know the families and children who are directly in my class. And with piano, I get to teach one student at a time.  This works very well for my introverted self.  The summers off are truly a time to rest and recharge and I really enjoy my alone time now that my children are both graduated from high school.  Still,  I’m sure I’ll miss them terribly when they eventually move out.

I’m working on relaxing and am hopeful that by the end of August, I’ll be fully rested and recharged and ready to go back to work.  I’m feeling very grateful that I’ve been able to enjoy a couple of months off each year.  It really helps me to appreciate and enjoy my preschoolers, piano students, and their families when I go back every fall.

What makes you feel grateful?

Wednesday Writing Update

Hello Lovely Readers!

Welcome to my Wednesday writing update.  This is where I let you know what I’ve been working on this week in my writing life.  Summer is a time where I shift my focus to more picture book writing as I do not have to teach for a couple of months.

Below are my latest book dummies.  I just fold 8 pages of 8 1/2 by 11 paper in half and staple them together.  Then I print off my manuscript and cut and paste based on 12-14 spreads to make a 32 page picture book.

These are the two I worked on this week.  My next step is to read them aloud and record them with my phone.  Then I play back the stories and listen for any flaws.

This week I’m also working on revising an older manuscript I hadn’t touched in several months.  That story will also need to be made into a dummy fairly soon.

I am also reading a lot of comparative picture books as mentor texts.

What writing projects have you been working on this week?

Welcome!

Hello and Welcome!

I’m happy you’re here.  I hope you’ll take some time to pour a cup of tea or a nice cool glass of lemonade or whatever you fancy.  Then I hope you’ll spend a few moments reading.

I’m an early childhood educator, a picture book writer and a music teacher.  I do my best to juggle all three.  I love writing about child development, parenting, learning through play, my own growth as a writer, picture books, music and music education, active play, nature programs for children, and did I mention picture books?

Here’s my plan for this blog over the next couple of months. (In the fall you’ll get more early childhood related posts.)

  1. Three posts per week
  2. Mondays: sharing a little about me (this is a challenge since I’m an introvert but I am going to try)
  3. Wednesdays: writing updates (this is where I outline projects I’m currently working on and tell you about my process)
  4. Fridays: picture book reviews from 12×12 authors, Canadian writers, and other great books I’ve discovered.

I hope you’ll stop by and check it out!  And leave me some comments too.  Are you a parent? a writer? a teacher?  Then I think you’ll be interested in what you find here.

Have an awesome day!

Wednesday Writing Update

Hello and Welcome!

Thank you for stopping by.  My new plan for Wednesdays is to post weekly writing updates all summer.  Keeps me honest. Here goes…

  • I’ve just revised a picture book story and posted it for feedback.  This is probably about the 8th revision, but who’s counting?
  • I’m just now getting the art scanned for my next self published book which will be titled, The Lullaby Monsters.  I’d love to know what you think of the title.  IMG_3895

My hope is that next Wednesday, I’ll have a longer list as school just ended yesterday and I’ve got extra time to focus on writing.  Are you a writer?  I’d love to hear about your projects.  Are you a teacher?  I’d love to hear about what you do over the summer.

Happy Wednesday!
