Hello Lovely Readers! I was lucky enough to win a hardcover picture book through the Debut Review Challenge which I enjoyed doing. The challenge is fairly simple: just review 5 books by debut authors listed and enter to win prizes.
My book prize was Evie’s Field Day: More Than One Way to Win by Claire Annette Noland, illustrated by Alicia Teba, published by Cardinal Rule Press.
Synopsis from the inside cover:
Evie loves to run, jump, hop, and win. She even has ribbons and trophies to prove it. So, when field day comes around, she is sure she will add to her winning collection. When Evie finds herself ahead of the pack, she is faced with an important decision. Does she choose the chance at a trophy or the chance to be a good friend?
Join Evie as she navigates the playground and learns the ins and outs of sportsmanship.

Review:
I love the suggestions given to discuss before during and after reading the book. There are lots of opportunities to discuss feelings and work on empathy. I love the fact that a critter from the natural world is what makes Evie pause in the midst of competition. The connection to nature is something I think that children will naturally feel if given the opportunity. Coping with winning and losing, playing together, acknowledging feelings and being a good friend are at the forefront of children’s lives. Evie’s Field Day provides a good starting point for discussion and navigating games with rules. The illustrations, by Alicia Teba are lovely and the splashes of color with the black and white are so visually appealing. Teachers and parents will love to read this book to the little people in their lives and little ones need their grown ups to choose books just like this for them to grow and develop into caring citizens of the world. This book feels age appropriate for children from ages 5-8 who are beginning to play games with clear winners and losers.
